The Cheese Encounter is a locally owned cheese shop in the Bay & Algoma Neighborhood in Thunder Bay, Ontario. We specialize in artisanal cheese, carrying over 80 varieties, with many staples and a rotating selection of new ones to try. Overwhelmed by the selection? Our knowledgeable staff can guide you on your cheesy journey.

We also carry a wide variety of high quality cured and frozen meats, local goods, chocolate, condiments, dairy products, tinned seafood, olive oils, cheese accessories, and pantry items. A number of our products are produced locally and throughout Canada, as well as a variety of imported goods from Italy, France, Spain, Switzerland, England, Holland, and more. We source only the highest quality products available, and you'll taste the difference. Not just retail, we also offer services, and work with a number of local businesses in various capacities.

Gift Boxes

Beautifully presented in an elegant white box, finished with a red ribbon, bow, and The Cheese Encounter tag, our gift boxes are perfect for any occasion.

Choose from a selection of thoughtfully curated boxes ranging from $61 to $248, with various sizes and options available. Custom orders are also welcome.

Preordering is required. Orders can be arranged by phone or in-store.

Gift Certificates

Available in denominations of $10, $25, $50, and $100, gift certificates can be purchased in-store or arranged by phone.

Cheese of the Month Club

Discover something extraordinary each month with our Cheese of the Month Club. Enjoy a specially selected cheese that's either new to our shop or an exceptional variety worth exploring.

Perfect for adventurous food lovers, thoughtful gifting, or simply treating yourself.

Membership options include:

  • 3 months: $27/month
  • 6 months: $26/month
  • 12 months: $24/month

Join anytime by phone or in-store. The monthly pickup cutoff is the first Friday of each month. Registrations received after this date begin the following month.

From intimate gatherings to special celebrations, our custom cheese and charcuterie trays are designed to suit any occasion.

Whether you prefer something simple and elegant or an elaborate assortment, each tray is thoughtfully prepared to suit your preferences and needs.
